Reading Comprehension For Kids

Improving Reading Comprehension for Kids

Reading comprehension for kids is an important aspect of their education and remains so throughout their school life, as well as their career. No matter which phase of life your child is entering, reading comprehension will help them succeed in their goals. It is for this reason that reading comprehension should be started early for kids.

Reading comprehension is that step of learning which comes after a child learns to read. Once he/she has developed a certain level of proficiency in reading, the child needs to understand what he/she is reading. Reading comprehension for kids is motivated in school through comprehension exercises, but there are many other steps that can be taken at home in order to strengthen the process.

Reading to a child always helps with his/her comprehension. Read material that exceeds the reading level of your child just a little bit. A slightly higher level of reading material will prompt the child to ask questions and exert his/her brain to understand the text. Take the time and effort to explain and answer your child's questions. This works as a good comprehension exercise as well as an exercise for the brain.

Foster the habit of independent reading in a child. Make sure that there is plenty of reading material around the house- not just any reading material; it should be appropriate for the age of the child that appeals to him/her and can hold the kid’s attention once he/she starts reading it. It is recommended to put aside some time for family reading, a habit from which the child learns by example of the parents.

Let your child read out stories or narrate them to you. Repeating what they have read helps children in summarizing the story or text and clears their own concept of the subject. Once the child is finished with his/her narration, ask questions starting with ‘who’, ‘where’, ‘why’, ‘when’, ‘what’, etc. Asking questions to the child forces him/her to reexamine whatever has been read and makes the work of comprehending the subject material easier.

In order to sharpen a kid’s comprehension capabilities, the child needs to be able to utilize whatever information he/she has read and also have the ability to communicate it to someone else. In such cases, writing out a summary of the lesson hones the mentioned skills of the child.
Staying informed about your child’s progress in school is very important. Keep in regular touch with the teachers and discuss the child’s progress, as well as the roadblocks involved. Knowing where your child has learning or comprehension difficulties will make it easy for you to help your child overcome those blocks. Your child’s teacher will also be able to provide you with a few pointers that will help in increasing your child’s comprehension skills.

Apart from printed material for reading, you may also search online to find useful resources that can help. Interactive stories, rhymes, and songs for kids can help in your endeavor to enhance the reading comprehension of your child.

There has been a lot of research involved in the area of reading comprehension for kids. A number of strategies have been devised by various educationists to help children in improving their comprehension skills. The most common strategies that are used to improve your child’s competency in comprehension have been discussed above. With just a few changes in your daily habits, you can ensure your child’s future by strengthening his/her aptitude in comprehension.
